Anti-abortion group credits Trump with recent success of movement

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America credited President Donald Trump on Friday for heralding in several key anti-abortion victories that have set back Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry for the foreseeable future.

The anti-abortion organization recognized the Trump administration for rolling back the abortion industry’s access to taxpayer funds at the Family Leadership Summit in Des Moines, Iowa.

“It wouldn’t have happened without a president who understood the importance of confirming judges at all levels who would uphold the Constitution and the right to life, and who didn’t shy away from that fight,” SBA President Marjorie Dannenfelser said.

The keynote speech comes after Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law last week, which included a provision that revoked Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood.

“For years, Planned Parenthood has used our tax dollars not to increase healthcare for the poor, but to grow their share of abortions and ‘gender transitions,’ launch lawsuits aimed at taking down pro-life laws, and to fuel political activism to defeat our pro-life heroes in office,” Dannenfelser continued.

While a federal judge temporarily paused that provision in Trump’s spending bill, the anti-abortion group’s leader is confident Planned Parenthood will lose in the end.

“Even now, faced with existential loss, they still double down on abortion. And find federal judges who will attempt to stop this one-year defund,” she said. “They will fail and we will go back every single year we are in power and keep them out of our tax bills.”

Planned Parenthood has faced setbacks with the announced closure of four of its six clinics in Iowa. The abortion provider worries that at least 200 of its clinics will be shuttered following the passage of Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.”

Planned Parenthood recently faced another setback after the Supreme Court ruled that South Carolina, and by extension other states, could exclude Planned Parenthood from state Medicaid funds. The 6-3 majority also ruled that the abortion provider and a patient lacked standing to sue South Carolina, which in 2018 disqualified abortion providers from Medicaid reimbursements for abortion and nonabortion services alike.

Dannenfelser hailed the Supreme Court’s June 26 decision, calling it the “most significant pro-life victory since” the court reversed Roe v. Wade in 2022.

“Everyone who said Roe was indestructible missed the story. They underestimated the profound truth of this cause and the strength of the pro-life movement,” she told the crowd in attendance.

Additionally, she stressed the importance of maintaining the anti-abortion movement’s significant gains in recent weeks and years.

“Big Abortion’s war on unborn children and their mothers is a national threat, and it requires national leadership to defeat. If we don’t fight back, even the most pro-life state won’t remain that way for long,” she added as a cautionary warning.

The Family Leadership Summit brings together anti-abortion evangelicals and politicians to celebrate major anti-abortion milestones and look toward the future. The summit lasted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, with speakers such as Pastor Tony Evans and Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR) taking the stage.

Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA), who also spoke at the faith-centric event, signed the state’s heartbeat law that bans most abortions around six weeks of pregnancy when a fetal heartbeat is detected. SBA estimates over 2,000 lives have been saved because of the heartbeat protection law.

“Governor Reynolds, thank you, we’re going to miss you,” Dannenfelser said during the speech. The Republican incumbent is not seeking reelection in 2026; her term expires in January 2027.

The event was held with the 2028 Iowa Republican caucuses in mind. Iowa is a key primary state, traditionally hosting early primary caucuses.

“I know you are very well aware of your crucial role in that process and in the future direction of the nation,” Dannenfelser told the audience.

“What a point of encouragement and motivation that Iowans will be decisive in how the GOP approaches the issue of abortion in the next elections. We must demand that anyone seeking our vote live up to the promise the party has made in platform after platform to protect unborn children nationally,” she added. “Today, I am calling on all voters to send that clear message at this pivotal moment in the greatest human rights battle of our time.”

Vice President JD Vance, one of the strongest contenders for the GOP presidential nomination in 2028, positioned himself as an anti-abortion advocate during his time in Congress. Vance spoke at the latest March for Life event in Washington, D.C., shortly after assuming office in January.
